There's no city nearby that I know of, but the Wall can be reached from touristy access areas. The access area we started at was Simatai, which is all closed. We stayed at an inn on the other side of the wall from Simatai. Then we walked along the wall to the next access area, Jinshanling. These two access areas have small trams to lift visitors, so the Chinese guys can walk in their dress slacks and loafers, and so the Chinese ladies can wear their high heals and sport sunbrellas. But we were able to avoid almost all of that nonsense by poaching from Simatai.
How do you spell the city? Sounded like Simiti.
